For almost a decade, there has been numerous petitions, open letters, emails to release the source code under the General Public License, at one point there was even cooperation from gaming legends such as John Romero as well as many others in the game production business.

This latest release will allow GPL Doom source ports to easily and legally intergrate support for both Heretic and Hexen, without the need for emulation.
