“Ugh,” you mutter to yourself as you repeatedly click again and again, just to progress another 100 experience points. The clock ticks on, minutes pass, and... Ah! Finally, you’ve reached your 1,000 point goal. It’s a shame that there are still another 5,000 to go before the next skill level!

That basically sums up the Runescape experience. But for some bizarre reason, I feel like I should elaborate on the game a little more fairly.

Runescape was one of the first browser-based MMORPGs, and it really shows. This game was originally formed as an entity known as DeviousMUD in 1998 by UK software company Jagex. Runescape brags the ability of being able to run on low-end machines, but unfortunately, this comes at a price to those of us who are used to seeing much higher-quality graphics. Compared to recently-produced video games, Runescape's visuals are incredibly dated. And the graphics aren't the only low-quality aspect of the game; the sound effects are much like something you would hear in an 80's arcade machine. The clang of your scimitar hitting a guard’s shield or the sizzle of melting ore in the furnace could really use some work. I was expecting something with a little more ‘KA-BLAM!’ to it than a simple 'ting’ during combat.

I’ve been playing Runescape for approximently 700 hours, for the last 2 years, so that I can have the opportunity to write a decent review for it. Though, as a an F2P (Free to Play) member, I have lost out on a lot of the content which is available to members only. To become a P2P (Pay to Play) member, you would pay roughly $5 a month. This gives you access to the other 70% of the game which has many more unique features and items to collect. P2P also offers over 60 different quests, while F2P only gives you 18.

TrainingThough, I'm not entirely convinced that my $5 would even prove to be worthwhile; it's just too simple. It functions as a point-and-click MMORPG, meaning if you click on a location, your character will go to that spot. In fact, the whole game is played with just your mouse.

The goal, so to speak,  of Runescape is to complete the quests that are scattered at random points throughout the world. However, Many players aim to max out their skill levels and rake in as much gold as they can to replace said quests, and therefore, have an alternative goal for the game. That's one of the best aspects in Runescape - you can have your own individual goal, and you don't have to follow the almost non-existent storyline.

To help you through the game, you are provided with a handful of non-combat skills. A couple of these include smithing, which is used to smelt ore into bars that can be hammered into armoury or weapons. Cooking helps you prepare foods that can be used to replenish your health. You can also mine from numerous rocks to obtain various ore.

Additionally, a number of fighting skills are used to determine your character’s general combat level. Beyond your standard attack, defence, and magic stats, there are other abilities like prayer, which can defend you in combat or allow you to hit your opponent with up to 15% more damage, among other things. Range also defines your skill with a crossbow or longbow, which can come in handy in certain situations.

The economy of Runescape is a fragile one – the latest update could make prices of some items skyrocket while others plummet. The P2P aspect of Runescape depends entirely on F2P, which creates a dilemma. Jagex wants users to purchase P2P, but if everyone had this, the Runescape economy would collapse due to lack of supply of F2P items such as normal Rune Essence, Yew logs, Lobsters, and Air Runes.

The key downside of an F2P world is that you’ll get an awful lot of preteen children playing it, which can destroy the roleplaying structure of the game. The community of Runescape is childish, especially in F2P. It is absolutely filled to the brim of children under the age of 14 who seem to swamp the economy. This is bearable, however, if you turn off your public chat or if can withstand being called a ‘n00b’ every twenty seconds.

Jagex provides weekly updates for the game, most of which are only for the P2P players. It sometimes feels as if they're forgetting about F2P players with the lack of additions for the free members. This frustrates the F2P users, but P2P players simply respond, “If you want an update, get P2P.” Many users consider this unfair, but personally, I believe they have a point.

I can’t help but feel that F2P is merely a demo for the “full” version of Runescape. There are over five skills that areMining there to taunt you about what P2P offers. That's not to mention the numerous areas in the F2P world where you can see quite a lot of what P2P gives you, such as the recently-introduced Gnome Glider, in which you can explore the lands of P2P from an aerial perspective.

Despite of all of Runescape’s shortcomings, I keep coming back for more. Why, you ask? It’s free, and it's fun if you have some time to kill.

Graphics – 3/10 – Really could do with some work, from a modern stance. These graphics are the worst I have seen in any modern game, save for those developed by independent companies.

Sounds – 4/10 – Rather ugly sound effects, but can be avoided by simply disabling them. The MIDI music helps add to the atmosphere.

Gameplay – 3/10 – Some aspects of the game, including the more boring parts such as skill grinding, could do with some work to make them more interactive and fun. That aside, it feels like a huge accomplishment when you have gone up a level in a skill. I can’t help but feel that F2P is merely a demo for the P2P option.

Fanbase – 3/10 – Runescape is full of children. This isn’t always a bad thing, but Runescape seems to attract a mass of immature players.

The reason that Free-to-play seems like it is a demo, is that it IS a demo for Pay-to-play. Second of all, the graphics are actually pretty
good considering that it is a Java game, and they are making a
massive graphical update in July, according to the behind the scenes
and Development Diary. A third thing to mention, is that many of the
children don't go to members, and so the game is much more
enjoyable that way. A fourth thing that I would like to mention is
that you say the point of the game is to quest. This is indefinitely
incorrect. The point of the game is to do what you wish to do.
I personally do not like quests that much, so I train skills, or do
combat instead. Some people just sign in and talk. Quests are not the point
of the game. Of course this is just my two cents worth.

Sorry for Re-Posting, but that second picture is not the dwarfen mine, it is the
Scorpion Chasm, also known as the Al-Kahrid mine. Just thought I would point
that out.

Try rewriting the review...after you've played the game as a member, and playing
for fun and not for trying to find where problems lie.

Sounds like he was playing for fun, but it just wasn't delivering
Korihor  - I'd have to agree   |67.150.13.xxx |2008-06-28 04:00:15
As somebody who has been playing F2P for several years and just
"switched" to the membership option, all I can say is:

Playing F2P is
only playing about 10% of the game. It isn't even half of the combat skills,
where F2P is missing options like Summoning, Slayer, and Hunter, not to mention
how F2P is missing out on a range of armor that I can only say is mind boggling.
Knowing when and where to poison (or have anti-poison) is another level of
complexity simply missing from F2P.

As for the F2P economy impacting on the P2P
economy..... yeah, I admit that it does. But I'd also mention that the P2P
version of Runescape would do very fine without the F2P users collecting raw
materials, and most P2Pers really don't use ordinary rune essence anyway, except
perhaps when they are just barely starting out with Runecrafting in the first
place.

As far as having a "fragile economy", I'm not entirely sure what
you a...

To some of the people who have said that many of the children don't go members,
I advise you to look at the runescape official forums (specifically the rants
forum). You will find a community just like the one that is described in the
F2P version. If you go to the hotspots in F2P you will find all the childish
preteen players you talk about. If you go to the Musa Point fishing docks in
the game in the F2P worlds, you won't be impressed with the community. If you
go to outside forums, you will find a much nicer community, and there are clan
chats that are filled with better people. The more mature people are usually
talking with a group of friends in a clan chat than talking with strangers
beside them. Thus, they appear to not be talking, so they are less noticeable
than the obnoxious preteens.

Loads of what you said were wrong, and you havent been playing nearly long
enough to understand how fun Runscape is, so if you really want to write a
desent reveiw, play for at least one year in members. For the last year that I
have played, I havent been called a noob once. Members is much better than free
to play, so you you can't base a review of a game soley off the free version.
There are much better grafics, sounds, gameplay (the minigames), and fanbase in
members.

I have been playing for four years now, and I have never been bored
on runescape for more than a day. There is so much to do that if you ever get
bored, there's always something else to do for fun.

first off, the Graphics are amazing considering that they are java based, also
they are updating them in june so you should fix this when that comes
out.

Seccond, the P2P community tends to be better than the F2P
community.

Gameplay is alot better in members worlds. special attacks add
variety to combat for one, but i do agree it can be kind of borring

for the
music and sound, put on your own music

Let's clear a few things up.

1) I have been playing
Runescape for two years now, for an around an average of 12 hours a week. This
last month, I've lost interest in Runescape, and I've cut down to maybe an hour
or two a month.
2) This review is for F2P - considering that's what the majority
of users play. Who cares if P2P is the real game? F2P is entitled to a review
too.
3) We are entitled to our own opinions. I didn't think the game was
groundbreaking - you do. It doesn't matter, I am entitled to write my own review
of the game, from a casual gamers stance, if I wish to.
4) It's no harder to
code a graphically intense game in Java, than it is in any other programming
language - I know this, as I have been learning both Java and C++ for quite some
time. The low graphics are there to allow lower-speced users to play the game,
and helping those with a slower internet speed.
5) The ratings are according...

You have played for a few months in F2P only. To write a review on a game, I
suggest you play one to its full extent.

You neglect the most powerful aspect
of this game, it ability to hold its players in the game for a very long time
despite its current graphical limitations.

I give your review a 2/10 due to
it not conveying how much fun it is to play!
Omali  - This review fails   |69.204.85.xxx |2008-06-25 02:12:47
For someone with three ranked skills, you sure are claiming you know a lot more
than you do. There aren't 200+ p2p quests, the goal of the game isn't quests,
you can't even label your pictures right, and again you have no idea what you're
talking about.
Allyofpikmin  - Could be any more wrong   |70.180.194.xxx |2008-06-25 02:37:46
All those reviews are off.

For one, Runescape has the best graphics of any
Java run game to date.

As for sounds, they just got an update and are more
realistic sounding then ever before, unless your aim is surround-sound for
eveything in trhe world.-_-

The Gameplay is update weekley, sometimes more,
with new quest, items, and sometimes aras. ver changing and darin you to keep up
with it all!

Fan base is partially right. True, Runescape has a ton of
pre-teen players but thats f2p. Go to a p2p server and be embraced by friendly,
compitent players, save for th one moron that manages to survive long enough to
be banned after getting a Barrow Set

Yep, you reviewed F2P. Dont forget, if you haven't played as amember - you
haven't played RuneScape. F2P is like.. 1-2 hour tour, that's it. It's not even
a game
Unconscious   |SAdministrator |2008-06-25 14:53:03
avatar That may be the case - but "Free to Play" is still a game. Thus, why
it's called "Free To Play" and not "Runescape Demo".

The F2P
and P2P experiences are completely different, granted. However, I have reviewed
the F2P experience.

Rizimar added in the bit about 200 quests - not too sure
where he got that information. I'll change it.

RUNESCAPE IS FOR GAY PEOPLE WHO CAN'T GET ANY PUSSY!!!!
Anonymous  - this isn't a fair review   |72.73.178.xxx |2008-06-25 17:17:34
until you review the game as a member, this is not a fair review for runescape.
when you play through a decent 10 levels, and 75 quests as a member, you will be
able to make a fair review.
Bubba   |74.167.91.xxx |2008-06-25 22:58:14
"2) This review is for F2P - considering that's what the majority
of users
play. Who cares if P2P is the real game? F2P is entitled to a
review
too."

Then change the title to "Runescape Free Version"
review.
Un   |66.25.144.xxx |2008-06-27 03:02:15
If you're just going to review just the f2p section of Runescape, then rename
this "Runescape - f2p review." If you're going to keep the name then I
suggest you pay the mesely five dollars and spend a good 30 hours or so in p2p.
It's really a lot different.

I don't care if you still think Runescape sucks
after that, a lot of people do, I just want a fair review.

PS: Quests aren't
the entire goal of the game, 'scapers can set their own goals, completing all
quests is just one goal that people may or may not want to do.
